Fact is, though, this is often not to do with their actual religious beliefs or practices but more to do with how they are ‘labelled’ because of their culture, background or even name. In Scotland, the word sectarianism is most often used to describe behaviour between Protestants and Roman Catholics. This could be trouble between schools or football teams, insulting jokes or name-calling and can lead to serious violence. There can also be more hidden evidence of sectarianism, for instance, people perceived to be of a particular faith or background may find it hard to get jobs in certain areas or with certain firms.
