Hearing Women’s Voices: Our Experience as Evidence

Since March 2016, the Glasgow Women’s Library In Her Shoes project has invited women to share their experiences of hostility targeted at their gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion and disability.

Many of the women who came forward told us that they had not been taken seriously when they shared their stories in the past. They told us that their lived experience has been dismissed as anecdotal; as isolated incidents with little value as ‘evidence’.

But we have seen that women’s experiences of verbal abuse, intimidation and physical violence often resonate with other women, and that the sharing and collective acknowledgement of lived experience reveals previously invisible or erased evidence.

By sharing and acknowledging lived experience as valid and valuable evidence of hostility and oppression, and by rejecting erasure and refusing to remain silent, women are exploring positive ways of challenging prejudice, and are supporting others to do the same.

At our In Her Shoes: Gender and Prejudice event on 29th March 2017, we celebrate the collective action women have been taking to challenge prejudice, and hear from women who are engaged in academic research into hate behaviours and targeted hostility.
